Physical Therapist Assistant Bill Rodowsky's Recommended Self-Care Tools
After more than three decades working with patients as a Physical Therapist Assistant and Licensed Massage Therapist, I've seen every gadget, gizmo, and gimmick the wellness industry has to offer. What you'll find on this page isn't a shopping list — it's the short list of tools I personally use, recommend to my clients, and stand behind clinically. Every item here earns its place.

The Foundation: Foot & Arch Health
Most pain — knee, hip, back — traces back to the feet. These are the tools I use to build a strong, functional foundation from the ground up.
Elgin Archxerciser Pro
Your feet are the foundation of everything above them. Weak arches contribute to knee pain, hip dysfunction, and chronic low back pain — something I've seen confirmed in clinic for 35 years. The Elgin Archxerciser is the only resistance-based arch strengthening device I've found that isolates the intrinsic foot muscles the way clinical rehab requires. I recommend it to runners, pickleball players, and anyone dealing with plantar fasciitis, flat feet, or recurring lower extremity issues.
Dyna Ball-Grip Strength
Your feet are the foundation of everything above them. Weak arches contribute to knee pain, hip dysfunction, and chronic low back pain — something I've seen confirmed in clinic for 35 years. The Elgin Archxerciser is the only resistance-based arch strengthening device I've found that isolates the intrinsic foot muscles the way clinical rehab requires. I recommend it to runners, pickleball players, and anyone dealing with plantar fasciitis, flat feet, or recurring lower extremity issues.
Self-Massage & Trigger Point Release
These are the tools that put professional-level bodywork in your own hands. Used correctly, they can reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and speed recovery between activity.
Thera-Cane Massager
This is one of the most clinically useful self-massage tools ever designed. The S-shaped hook lets you reach trigger points in the upper back, neck, and shoulder that are otherwise impossible to address on your own. I've recommended the Thera-Cane to clients for years — it's durable, effective, and requires zero electricity. A staple in my toolkit.
Cupping With Laser
Cupping therapy has deep roots in traditional medicine — and modern research is catching up by adding red light laser to enhance to effects. This rechargeable device mimics the myofascial decompression effect of professional cupping, with the addition of Red Light Laser bring healing cellular energy. Particularly useful for chronic tight spots in the back, thighs, and calves. A different kind of release that many clients find more effective than compression alone.
Percussion therapy is excellent for loosening tight muscle tissue before exercise and flushing out metabolic waste after. This compact unit delivers serious vibration without the bulk or price tag of high-end devices. I recommend it for post-pickleball recovery, pre-workout warm-up, and general daily muscle maintenance.
Body Back Glacier Ball
Ice massage is one of the most underused recovery tools in the 55+ active adult population. The Glacier Ball combines cold therapy with targeted massage pressure — ideal for post-activity inflammation, acute soreness, and areas like the IT band, plantar fascia, and Achilles. Simple, effective, and no electricity required.
Core, Posture & Spinal Health
A stable spine is a pain-free spine. These tools support proper alignment, core activation, and spinal mobility — the cornerstones of the work I do with every client.
Miracle Ball Method
This is not a foam roller. The Miracle Ball Method uses small, gentle balls to release the deep postural muscles that hold chronic tension — often without your awareness. It's one of the most accessible and effective approaches to pain relief I've encountered in my career, and the book explains the method clearly. I recommend it especially for clients with chronic back, neck, and hip tension who haven't found relief through traditional stretching.
Pain Relief & Inflammation Support
These are the non-prescription tools and topicals I recommend for managing everyday soreness, inflammation, and acute flare-ups — backed by clinical use and client results.
KT Tape Joint Support
Kinesiology tape is one of the most versatile tools in a clinician's toolkit. Applied correctly, it can reduce swelling, support joints, improve proprioception, and allow continued activity during recovery. I use KT Tape with pickleball clients managing shoulder, knee, and Achilles issues. The cotton version is my preference — it breathes well and holds up through sweat.
Boiron Arnicare Gel
Arnica has been used for centuries to address bruising, muscle soreness, and minor inflammation — and I've seen it work consistently in both my clinical and coaching practice. The Boiron Arnicare gel absorbs cleanly with no greasy residue and no strong odor. It's the topical I reach for first after a hard training session or an acute soft tissue strain.
Prungo Red Light Therapy — RLT300
Red and near-infrared light therapy is one of the most researched emerging modalities in rehabilitation and sports medicine. At the right wavelengths, it supports cellular energy production, reduces inflammation, and accelerates tissue repair. The Prungo RLT300 delivers both 650nm red and infrared light in a compact, affordable unit. I use it personally for recovery and recommend it to clients with chronic joint pain or slow-healing soft tissue injuries.
Percussion Massage Gun
Pelvic Rocker Core Trainer
The OPTP Pelvic Rocker is a professional-grade rehab tool I've used in clinical settings for years. It trains the subtle lumbo-pelvic stabilizing muscles that most core exercises miss entirely — the ones responsible for protecting your spine during everyday movement. If you have recurring back pain or feel unstable on your feet, this is one of the most targeted tools available.
ThermaCare Heat Wraps
Sustained, low-level heat therapy is clinically proven to reduce muscle spasm and improve tissue extensibility — and ThermaCare delivers exactly that in a hands-free, wearable format. I recommend these to clients who need continuous heat during travel, at a desk, or during light activity. They're a travel essential for anyone with chronic back tension.
Hand Massager with Heat
As a Physical Therapist Assistant my hands take a beating, I use this massager at the end of every day. I recommend this hand massager for clients managing arthritis, trigger finger, or general joint discomfort in the hands and wrists. Quality construction at a price point that makes compliance easy.
Light & Technology-Assisted Recovery
Emerging recovery technologies I've personally tested and found clinically credible — not trends, but tools with real physiological mechanisms behind them. Laser technology is the next step in heath and healing on a cellular level.
Lifepro Vibration Plate
Whole body vibration has a strong evidence base for improving balance, bone density, and neuromuscular activation, it’s my #1 recommendation for treating Osteoporosis at home — all critical concerns for active adults 50+. I recommend the Lifepro platform for daily use: 10 minutes in the morning activates the nervous system, improves circulation, and primes the body for movement. It's one of the most efficient recovery and activation tools available
